Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M48, also known as the Puška M.48, is a Yugoslavian post-World War II rifle that reflects a fusion of Belgian M24 series design elements with influences from the German Karabiner 98k. Adopted by the Yugoslav People's Army in the early 1950s, the M48 served as the standard service rifle until it was replaced by the Zastava M59/66, a licensed variant of the Soviet SKS semi-automatic carbine in the early 1960s. The M48's development involved taking the M24 rifle design and incorporating modifications inspired by the Karabiner 98k, leading to a rifle that, while visually similar to the 98k, featured distinctive differences, particularly in its parts. Despite outward resemblances, many components, such as the bolt and related action parts, are not interchangeable between the M48 and the Karabiner 98k.

One of the most notable external features of the M48 is its top handguard, which extends behind the rear sight and terminates just before the receiver ring. This design element helps differentiate it from the 98k, though this feature is also found on other models. The M48 incorporates a stock similar to the 98k but with a shorter, intermediate-length action and receiver, aligning it more with the M24 series Mausers. Unlike the prewar M24 series, which had straight bolts and were refurbished with Belgian parts, the M48 is equipped with curved bolts. The stocks of M48 rifles are typically crafted from thicker elm or beech wood and include a robust stainless steel butt plate, unlike the M24/47 models that feature thinner walnut or beech wood stocks and lack the milled stainless steel "cupped" butt plate.

The M48 rifle has five primary versions, beginning with the M48 model produced from 1950 to 1952. This initial version featured a full crest and was constructed entirely with machined steel parts.
