Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Zastava M59/66 PAP, also known as papovka, is a Yugoslav-licensed version of the Soviet SKS semi-automatic rifle. The nickname "papovka" comes from PAP, an abbreviation for poluautomatska puška, Serbian for “semi-automatic rifle.” During the 1950s, Yugoslavia’s defense industry planned to develop a self-loading rifle to replace the bolt-action Zastava M48, which was then standard issue in the Yugoslav People’s Army. In 1959, Yugoslavia acquired the license to manufacture the Soviet SKS semi-automatic carbine. Limited production began in 1961 at Preduzece 44 (Enterprise Facility 44) in Kragujevac, which had expanded significantly since 1953 to support mass weapon production. After this initial production run, no SKS rifles were made at Kragujevac until 1964, when serialized mass production began. The earliest Yugoslav SKS rifles produced there were designated M59 and closely resembled late Soviet SKS patterns, although they lacked the Soviet SKS’s chrome-lined barrels.

In 1966, the M59 was redesigned to allow firing of 22mm rifle grenades by adding an integrated grenade launcher spigot at the muzzle. The updated model featured a folding ladder sight for grenade aiming, which also functioned as a gas port shutoff to ensure proper cycling when launching grenades. This version was designated the M59/66. In its final production years, some M59/66 rifles were equipped with flip-up tritium or painted phosphorous night sights, earning the designation M59/66A1.
