Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Sphinx AT.380-M is a finely crafted Swiss-made subcompact semi-automatic pistol that stands out for its precision engineering, high manufacturing quality, and thoughtful design, reflecting the legacy of Sphinx Systems Limited—a Swiss firm known for tight tolerances and excellent firearms long appreciated by special forces, elite police units, and sports shooters before the company ceased production. Chambered in .380 ACP, the AT.380-M typically features a 3.27-inch barrel and an overall length of about 6 inches, resulting in a compact and easily concealable handgun that remains comfortable to shoot. Unlike many small pistols of its era, the AT.380-M often offers magazine capacities from 10 to 15 rounds, giving it a relatively high payload for such a small frame and outperforming several contemporaries in capacity. The pistol’s action is double-action-only (DAO), which—paired with a solid blowback layout—provides a consistent trigger pull cycle and inherent safety for defensive use. Its construction typically includes a stainless steel frame, a black slide, and checkered synthetic grips that provide secure handling; the sights are typically fixed or dovetailed, emphasizing simplicity and reliability. Safety features include an automatic firing-pin block to prevent discharge without a trigger pull and, on “-M” variants, a manual firing-pin block safety similar in function to that of the Beretta 92F, adding another layer of protection. Although the AT.380-M is no longer imported into the United States due to changing firearm trade regulations and Sphinx’s eventual closure, it remains respected among collectors and shooters who value precision Swiss engineering, solid build quality, and an uncommon but capable design in the subcompact .380 ACP category.
