Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1861 rifle-musket was one of the most iconic and widely used firearms of the American Civil War, serving as the standard-issue infantry weapon for the Union Army. Developed at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, it was a refinement of earlier designs, particularly the Model 1855, incorporating a rifled barrel and using the new Minie ball (a conical bullet), which allowed for greater accuracy and range than previous smoothbore muskets. The Model 1861 was a .58 caliber, muzzle-loading rifle-musket with a 40-inch barrel and a weight of about 9 pounds, and its design featured a Type II percussion lock for improved reliability. Over 1 million of these rifles were produced between 1861 and 1865, making it the most widely manufactured weapon of the war. While its effective range was 200 to 300 yards, its rate of fire was about three shots per minute. The rifle played a key role in major Civil War battles such as Gettysburg, Antietam, and Shiloh and was praised for its durability and effectiveness. Although it had some issues in wet conditions, the Model 1861 was a dependable weapon for Union soldiers and remains one of the most important firearms in American military history. After the war, many were converted to breech-loading designs, and today, original Springfield Model 1861 muskets are highly valued by collectors and historians, symbolizing a critical step in the evolution of military technology.
