Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield U.S. Model 1855 rifle-musket, officially adopted by the U.S. Army on July 5, 1855, represented a significant advancement in military firearms, featuring a .58-caliber rifled barrel designed for the newly adopted Minié ball, which offered far greater range and accuracy than the older .69-caliber smoothbore muskets. It also introduced the experimental Maynard tape primer system, which used a roll of paper tape embedded with priming material to automatically place a primer over the nipple as the hammer was cocked, although it could still be fired with standard percussion caps; in practice, the tape primer proved unreliable, especially in damp conditions, and was soon abandoned in favor of conventional percussion caps. Produced between 1856 and 1860 at both the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts and the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia, approximately 60,000 examples were manufactured, many of which armed the U.S. Regular Army at the outbreak of the Civil War, while machinery and captured arms from Harpers Ferry helped equip the Confederacy’s Richmond and Fayetteville Armories. The design and .58-caliber chambering of the Model 1855 directly influenced the simplified Springfield Model 1861, which omitted the Maynard primer system and became the primary rifle-musket of Union forces for the remainder of the war.
