Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Star Arms Model Super is a classic Spanish-made semi-automatic pistol that exemplifies mid-20th-century European handgun design, blending elements of the Colt-style locked-breech system with features tailored to military and police service. Manufactured by Star Bonifacio Echeverria in Eibar, Spain, the Model Super was introduced in the late 1940s as an evolution of earlier Star pistols and chambered primarily in 9mm Largo (9×23mm), though some examples were produced in 9mm Parabellum for export and contract use. Mechanically, it employs a Browning-type short-recoil, locked-breech action with a linkless cam system, closely related to the operating principles of the M1911 but adapted to Star’s own engineering standards. The pistol is built on an all-steel frame and slide, giving it a solid, durable feel, and typically features an 8-round single-stack magazine, a 4.5-inch barrel, and fixed iron sights optimized for service accuracy. Unlike the Colt 1911, the Model Super omits a grip safety, instead relying on a frame-mounted manual safety, which allows it to be carried cocked and locked while maintaining a simpler control layout. Ergonomically, the pistol has a slim grip profile with checkered plastic or wooden grip panels, a comfortable grip angle, and a reputation for good natural pointability. Widely issued to Spanish military, police, and security forces, and exported to various international markets, the Star Model Super earned a reputation for robust construction, reliability, and respectable accuracy, making it a practical duty pistol in its day. Today, it is appreciated by collectors and shooters alike for its historical significance, solid craftsmanship, and its role as one of the most successful service pistols produced by Spain’s once-prominent arms industry.
