Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this coveted semi-automatic rifle today for auction; this is the Sterling in England for Armalite AR-180!
The Armalite AR-180 is a semi-automatic rifle developed as a civilian version of the military-oriented AR-18, designed by Eugene Stoner and Arthur Miller. Production began in 1969 at ArmaLite’s facility in Costa Mesa, California, with approximately 4,018 units made there by 1972. An additional 3,927 rifles were manufactured by Howa in Japan from 1970 to 1974, before Japanese arms export restrictions halted production. From 1979 to 1985, Sterling Armaments in the United Kingdom produced around 12,362 more units. In total, only about 20,307 AR-180 rifles were ever made.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Armalite AR-180 is a distinctive semi-automatic rifle that translated the AR-18’s modern engineering into a civilian-friendly platform. Designed by Eugene Stoner and Arthur Miller, the AR-180 uses a robust short-stroke gas piston system and a stamped steel receiver to deliver reliable function and simplified manufacturing compared with the AR-15 family. Chambered in 5.56mm and fitted with an 18¼" barrel and a 3-prong flash hider, this example pairs practical ballistics with controllable handling. The winged protected post front sight and adjustable aperture rear provide a durable, battlefield-oriented sighting solution, while the black synthetic furniture and side-folding buttstock make the rifle compact for transport and rugged in the field.

Beyond its mechanical traits, the AR-180 is notable for its limited production run and resulting collectibility: roughly 4,018 units were produced by ArmaLite in California, another 3,927 by Howa in Japan, and some 12,362 by Sterling Armaments in the U.K., for a total near 20,307 rifles worldwide. Manufactured for Sterling in England for Armalite, this configuration reflects the model’s international production history and its role as an alternative to contemporary service rifles. For shooters and collectors alike, the AR-180 offers an appealing mix of innovative gas-piston reliability, compact practicality, and historical rarity.
