Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Steyr-Mannlicher M1895 is a historically significant military rifle renowned for its innovative straight-pull bolt-action design and widespread use across European battlefields in the early 20th century. Manufactured by Steyr-Mannlicher, this particular example features a 30-inch blued barrel chambered in the powerful 8x56mmR cartridge—a later conversion adopted by Austria and Hungary to modernize the original 8x50R platform. The rifle is equipped with a dovetail triangle blade front sight and a ladder-style, V-notch adjustable rear sight, making it well-suited for accurate long-range shooting. Its robust straight-pull action, devised by Austrian arms designer Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher, was a mechanical innovation that allowed for quicker cycling of the bolt compared to traditional turn-bolt designs. The smooth hardwood stock adds a classic, utilitarian aesthetic to the rifle while providing a solid and ergonomic shooting platform.

The M1895’s action incorporates a rotary bolt head with two frontal locking lugs, providing a strong lock-up essential for the higher pressures of the 8x56mmR cartridge. The en bloc clip system—one of Mannlicher’s most influential contributions to firearms design—allowed for faster reloading, as the five-round clip is inserted directly into the internal box magazine and ejected automatically once emptied. This system, while efficient for rapid loading under combat conditions, had limitations: the clip had to be loaded right-side up, and partially loaded clips could not be topped off without removal. Additionally, the rifle’s large magazine opening, while necessary for the ejection of the clip, made it prone to collecting dirt and debris—an issue in harsh field conditions. The rifle's bolt design, though mechanically sound, lacked the strong primary extraction of rotating bolts, occasionally making stuck cases more difficult to remove in adverse environments.

Nonetheless, the M1895 proved to be a durable and accurate service rifle and saw extensive use through both World Wars. Originally manufactured at the state armories in Steyr, Austria and Budapest, Hungary, over 3 million units were produced by the end of World War I. This specific configuration, marked by its standard factory markings and outfitted with a long barrel and period-correct sights, reflects the full-length infantry rifle variant used by Austro-Hungarian forces. Post-war conversions to the 8x56R cartridge, like this example, are typically marked with an "S" on the receiver ring and continued in service with Austrian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, and Italian forces through World War II. With its blend of historical importance, mechanical uniqueness, and rugged design, the Steyr-Mannlicher M1895 remains a compelling artifact for collectors, historians, and military firearm enthusiasts alike.
