Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Designed by gunsmith Bill Grover of Texas Longhorn Arms as an homage to and improvement upon famed six-gun shooter and gunsmith Elmer Keith's #5 SAA revolver, the "Improved Number Five" featured a limited production run of approximately 1,200 units produced. Grover’s design was characterized by a unique grip frame, combining a modified Colt Bisley backstrap with a Single Action Army frontstrap, resulting in a distinctive shape. The revolver was engineered specifically to be loaded and unloaded from the right hand, with the loading gate and ejector rod positioned on the left side of the frame, allowing the user to maintain a firm grip while performing these operations. In a unique twist, the cylinder rotates in a counterclockwise direction, opposite to the traditional clockwise motion seen in most revolvers. It also featured adjustable sights, a 5-1/2” barrel, and the elegant Number Five base pin latch. Grover’s version was called the “Improved Number Five” because it incorporated modern springs, metallurgy, and a larger frame designed to handle high-pressure big-bore cartridges like the .44 Magnum.

Grover also believed that Samuel Colt, the founder of Colt’s Manufacturing Company, was left-handed, theorizing that early Colt revolvers were designed with the cylinder’s nipples on the right side for easier use by left-handed shooters. With this in mind, Grover’s revolver featured the loading gate and ejector rod on the left side for greater convenience for right-handed users. His guns quickly became known for their exquisite quality and unique design, though only a limited number were produced before the company closed in 1997.
