Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model of 1898, more commonly known today as the Springfield 1898 Krag–Jørgensen, is a historically significant bolt-action service rifle that marked a pivotal transitional period in U.S. military small arms at the turn of the 20th century. Adopted by the United States Army following earlier Krag designs of the 1890s, the Model 1898 was chambered for the then-modern .30-40 Krag smokeless powder cartridge, making it one of the first U.S. rifles to leave behind black powder in favor of higher-velocity ammunition, and saw widespread service including during the Spanish–American War and into the early Mexican campaigns before being superseded by the later M1903 Springfield. Built under license at Springfield Armory, the 1898 variant incorporated incremental improvements over its predecessors — including tighter production tolerances, an improved magazine cutoff, and the well-known side loading gate that allowed cartridges to be dropped directly into its five-round internal magazine without cycling the bolt — though this system’s comparatively slow reload rate would later be judged inferior to clip-loading designs used by foreign armies. Mechanically, the rifle features a smooth-operating Krag bolt with a non-rotating claw extractor riding atop the bolt, a wing safety on the cocking piece, and a prominent ladder rear sight paired with a bead front — typical of turn-of-the-century military sights — which provided soldiers with practical engagement capability at varied distances. With an overall length of roughly 49 inches, a 30-inch barrel, walnut stock, and robust steel construction, the Model 1898 is emblematic of pre-Mauser influenced U.S. design philosophy: rugged, reliable, and easy to shoot, though ultimately eclipsed by newer designs once combat experience highlighted the need for faster, more modern bolt actions. Today, original Model 1898 Krags are prized by collectors and military rifle enthusiasts for their role in U.S. military history and their connection to the dawn of smokeless powder service rifles.
