Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1960s, Colt became concerned about a decline in its market share due to the high labor costs involved in its manufacturing processes, which led to increased prices. To address this issue, Colt introduced an entirely new product line of revolvers known as the MK III series in 1969. The MK IIIs were designed to be the first major advancement of Colt's revolver designs since the beginning of the 20th century. They featured a new “J” frame and had no parts interchangeability with older models. The new revolvers were groundbreaking because they were the first modern revolver designs to employ a state-of-the-art transfer-bar lockwork system, replacing Colt’s traditional rebound hammer and safety block design. This system prevented the hammer from contacting the frame-mounted firing pin unless the trigger was deliberately pulled, greatly improving drop safety. Additionally, using sintered parts allowed for improved fabrication tolerances and a special heat treatment that resulted in a harder, more wear-resistant composition. The use of these parts virtually eliminated hand fitting, which significantly lowered labor costs associated with the assembly and manufacture of the MK III line, making it the world’s first truly machine-fitted revolver. Colt also incorporated stainless-steel springs, another first in the industry. Colt offered a wide range of versions for the Mark III series, which was produced from 1969 to 1983 and intended to replace all old medium-frame revolvers except the Python.

The Trooper Mark III was the top-of-the-line in the series. It had an adjustable sight and a heavy shrouded barrel. It also featured Target grips, a Target hammer, and Colt’s first Target trigger. The barrel was available in three lengths: 4 inches, 6 inches, and, later in production, 8 inches. The finishes included a new high-gloss bright blue-black, bright nickel, and satin electroless nickel, which is also known as “Coltguard.” The satin electroless nickel finish is often mistaken for stainless steel. The calibers offered were .22 LR, .22 Magnum, and .357 Magnum, while a few Trooper Mark III revolvers were special-ordered by law enforcement in .38 Special.
