Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this lot of two vintage double-action revolvers for a penny-start auction.
Due to their age and early manufacturing methods, these vintage revolvers should be treated primarily as historical firearms until their condition can be properly evaluated. Prior to any attempt at firing, both examples should be carefully inspected by a qualified gunsmith to ensure the mechanical integrity of the actions, lockup, timing, and overall safety of the firearms. Such precaution is especially important with antique or early cartridge revolvers, where wear, metal fatigue, or outdated ammunition specifications may present potential safety concerns.
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
A lot containing two vintage double-action revolvers—including the Hopkins & Allen XL No. 3 chambered in .32 Centerfire and an unmarked Belgian top-break revolver—offers an interesting look at the practical pocket revolvers commonly carried in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Hopkins & Allen example was manufactured by the Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing Company of Norwich, Connecticut, a firm well known for producing affordable and innovative revolvers for the American commercial market. The XL No. 3 features several distinctive mechanical characteristics, including a folding hammer spur that allowed the revolver to be fired double-action or manually cocked for single-action fire, along with a side-lever cylinder pin release used to remove the cylinder for loading and maintenance. Chambered in .32 Centerfire, these revolvers were compact, practical sidearms intended for personal defense and everyday carry.

The accompanying Belgian revolver likely originated from the prolific firearms industry centered in Liège, which exported enormous numbers of economical revolvers throughout Europe and the United States. Many of these revolvers were produced with minimal or no manufacturer markings and commonly utilized a top-break frame, allowing the barrel and cylinder assembly to hinge downward for loading while simultaneously ejecting spent cartridges. Such designs were popular for their convenience and ease of operation, making them well-suited for civilian self-defense during the period. Together, these two revolvers represent typical examples of the compact, mechanically simple handguns that were widely available to the public at the turn of the century and are today appreciated by collectors as historical artifacts from the early era of mass-produced personal firearms.
