Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mauser Model 1910 marked Waffenfabrik Mauser’s transition from large-frame military firearms to compact self-loading pistols. Designed primarily by Josef Nickl and built on patents filed between 1908 and 1910, this blow-back pistol was chambered in 6.35mm (.25 ACP). However, Mauser simultaneously developed a larger 7.65mm (.32 ACP) variant that would later become the Model 1914. Its design featured a fixed barrel held in place by a pin that also served as the recoil-spring guide, a striker-fired mechanism, and a manual safety lever on the left side. The initial “Side Latch” version (1911-1913) is distinguished by a removable side plate and a rotating latch above the trigger, providing access to the internals, including the bell-crank sear lever and disconnector. In late 1913, Mauser introduced the “First Variant New Model” (Model 1910/14, serial range 60,500-115,000 approx.), which eliminated the side latch, simplified disassembly, adopted a notched front sight, and featured the Mauser powder-barrel logo on the side plate; it also incorporated a redesigned disconnector and an integral striker guide rod for easier field maintenance.

After a post-war retooling period, the Second Variant New Model (serial range 207,000-342,000, approx. 1921-1928) ushered in a stepped grip frame, a stamped magazine release, broad plunge-milled slide serrations, and the slide legend WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER A.–G. OBERNDORF A.N.; minor internal changes also improved the magazine follower and safety mechanisms. Beginning around serial number 239,000, the right side of the slide was marked in sans-serif italic characters with “Mauser-6,35.” The Third Variant New Model (serial range 356,900-404,800, circa 1928-1936), often called the “1934 Transitional Model,” reflected the company’s renaming to Mauser-Werke A.G., switched to salt-blue finishes, altered slide markings (from “Mauser-6,35” to just “Cal. 6,35”), and introduced other subtle refinements such as partial serial number stamping and improved magazine base design.
Finally, the Fourth Variant New Model (Model 1910/34, serial range 401,800-429,000, circa 1934-1940) featured a one-piece curved-back grip, high-polish salt-blue finish, redesigned slide inscriptions, and further simplified design elements, rounding out the evolution of this compact pistol line. Although modest in caliber, the Model 1910 series earned worldwide respect for its craftsmanship and reliability, ultimately forming the foundation for Mauser’s later 7.65mm Model 1914 and Model 1934 pistols and serving as a collectible highlight for enthusiasts today.
