Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this awesome semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction, this is the Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf A. Neckar M1930 (M30) / C96.
The Mauser Model 1930 (commonly referred to by collectors as the “M30”) was the first C96 variant to receive an official factory designation and was produced from 1930 to 1937 as the final major commercial evolution of the Broomhandle pistol. The M1930 incorporated significant design refinements, including the Universal Safety system with a modified safety lever, revised hammer and sear components, and simplified internal machining to improve production efficiency. It is easily distinguished by its stepped barrel profile, thicker chamber walls, and a return to the full-size, unstepped grip frame fitted with 12-groove walnut grip panels. Additional identifying features include a small-ring hammer, revised lock-frame milling, updated tangent rear sight graduations, and a lanyard ring that swings side-to-side rather than fore and aft. A substantial portion of M1930 production was intended for export, with China representing one of Mauser’s most important markets; pistols destined for this market are often stamped with three small Chinese characters on the left side of the magazine well, translating to “Made in Germany,” serving as a factory-applied indication of German origin for foreign buyers.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Known by many names and nicknames across decades and continents—the "Broomhandle," the "Pistole 7.63," and the "Box Cannon"—the Mauser C96 traces its origins to 1896, when it first entered production in Oberndorf, Germany. Developed in the mid-1890s by the Feederle brothers—Fidel, Friedrich, and Josef—while working for Mauser, the pistol was initially met with some skepticism from company co-founder Paul Mauser. Early testing began in 1895, and the finalized design, designated Construktion 96, combined forward-thinking engineering with practical battlefield utility. The C96 featured a fixed barrel for improved accuracy, a top-loading internal box magazine fed by stripper clips, and the ability to attach a wooden holster-stock, allowing the handgun to be fired as a shoulder-stocked carbine. Chambered primarily in the high-velocity 7.63x25mm Mauser cartridge, it offered flat trajectory, excellent penetration, and remarkable precision for its time. Over its production life, the C96 underwent refinements to the extractor, firing pin, and receiver milling, while various military and government contracts produced versions with different barrel lengths, minor design changes, and occasional calibers—including 9x19mm Parabellum and .45 ACP—enhancing its appeal to collectors.

With its broomhandle-style grip, box magazine positioned ahead of the trigger, and long, slender barrel, the Mauser C96 remains one of the most instantly recognizable pistols in firearms history. Its distinctive design has made it a favorite among collectors and an icon in pop culture. The Mauser’s exotic profile quickly caught the attention of Hollywood and literature alike. In Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, it was the sidearm of choice for SMERSH agents, projecting menace and mystery. Clint Eastwood wielded it with gritty flair in the 1972 Western Joe Kidd, and in more recent years, it has appeared in period dramas such as Peaky Blinders. Perhaps most famously, the C96 served as the design inspiration for Han Solo’s DL-44 Heavy Blaster—arguably the most iconic sci-fi weapon in the Star Wars universe.
