Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther PP in .22 Long Rifle is the rimfire expression of one of the most influential European pistol designs of the 20th century — it takes the PP family’s compact, ergonomically balanced frame and double-action/single-action control scheme and packages them around a simple, reliable blowback action and a rimfire chambering that makes the pistol quiet, cheap to shoot, and superb for training, familiarization, and casual range work. Introduced as part of the broader PP/PPK family that debuted in 1929, the .22 variants preserve the PP’s characteristic slim grip and low bore axis that point naturally in the hand, while trading service calibers for the mild impulse and inexpensive ammunition of .22 LR — a combination that yields excellent controllability, very low felt recoil, and the ability to run long practice sessions without fatigue. Most modern .22 versions (including contemporary PPK/S-scale rimfire models) use steel slides and either alloy or stamped frames, feed from detachable box magazines that commonly hold around ten rounds in .22 form, and retain the PP’s manual safety/decocker and exposed hammer so shooters can carry or condition the pistol in either double-action first-shot mode or single-action follow-ups. The fixed-barrel, blowback layout gives the .22 PP inherently consistent barrel alignment and good out-of-the-box accuracy for a compact pocket pistol, and its sights are typically simple blade-and-notch units that support close-to-moderate range precision; for owners wanting optics or threaded barrels, later factory and aftermarket options exist on some modern rimfire PP/PPK/S models. Field-stripping is straightforward compared with many autoloaders — a practical advantage for training environments — and the platform’s long production history means spare parts and magazines are more available than for many other vintage designs. Whether used as a faithful small-bore trainer that mimics the handling of larger PP/PPK service pistols, a nostalgic collector’s piece, or a quiet plinker that’s pleasant to shoot all afternoon, the Walther PP in .22 LR blends classic ergonomics, simple mechanics, and economical shooting into a very satisfying small-caliber package
