Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
After World War I, the British Army sought a lighter, easier-to-train-with sidearm to replace the powerful but unwieldy .455-calibre Webley. In response, Webley & Scott adapted their Mk III top-break revolver to fire a heavy 200-grain .38 S&W bullet (.38/200), which offered reduced recoil yet effective performance via terminal tumbling and energy transfer. This combination allowed new recruits and officers to train more quickly while still maintaining acceptable stopping power for military service. Adopted in the early 1920s as the Webley Mk IV .38/200, the revolver retained the distinctive top-break action of its predecessors, making reloading fast and intuitive, and many wartime examples featured a utilitarian “war finish” that reflected the need for rapid production. Though externally similar to the larger-bore Webleys, the Mk IV was internally optimized for the smaller cartridge, resulting in a slightly lighter, handier weapon. Later, RSAF Enfield developed its own near-identical service revolver, the Enfield No. 2 Mk I (followed by the simplified Mk I* and Mk I** variants), which entered production in 1932 and served alongside the Webley throughout World War II.

Together, these revolvers became the standard British service sidearms of the interwar and wartime period, valued for their ruggedness, simplicity, and fast reload capability compared to swing-out-cylinder revolvers of the time. The Mk IV .38/200 remains historically significant for its role in modernizing British service pistols, and its distinctive profile and unique manual of arms continue to make it a favorite among collectors and military historians alike.
