Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1922, the British Army replaced the bulky .455 Webley with the smaller 38/200 (.38 S&W) due to the lessons learned from World War One. During the war, the professional core of the enlisted British Army had been nearly wiped out, requiring quick training for replacements. The heavy recoil of the .455 hindered this effort. In preparation for future wars, the British Army believed that a smaller caliber would make training new officers easier. Through testing, they concluded that a 200-grain slug fired at a low velocity caused tumbling and fragmentation upon impact, minimized over-penetration, and transferred more energy onto the target without excessive recoil. The Mark IV .38 is comparable in size to other service pistols of its time. Some examples may be marked "WAR FINISH" due to limited time for finishing the metal or polishing some parts. The cylinder retaining cam, latch, and cam lever are all exposed, setting the Webley apart, while the shape and contour of the barrel give it a distinctive steampunk appearance. Although it doesn't hold a 33-round magazine, the Webley revolver's historical significance and battlefield effectiveness make it a classic. Its unique appearance and manual-of-arms add to its appeal and distinguish it from other weapons.
