Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 101 Pigeon Grade XTR is the deluxe, coin-finished and engraved version of Winchester’s mid-20th-century over-and-under shotgun, created as a higher-grade option within the Model 101 family introduced in the early 1960s to compete with the Browning Superposed. Unlike the plain field grades, the Pigeon Grade XTR features full silver/coin action finishing with pictorial game/scroll-engraved artwork, often depicting pigeons and other birds, complemented by finely checkered high-gloss finished high-grade walnut stocks for both aesthetics and ergonomic handling. The Model 101 line, including the Pigeon/XTR variants, was manufactured in Japan under Olin’s supervision, with production spanning from the 1960s into the 1980s. Mechanically, the Pigeon Grade XTR is typically equipped with a single selective trigger, a tang-mounted safety that doubles as a barrel selector, and automatic ejectors on many examples.

Chambers and choke arrangements vary by year and model, with both 2 3/4" and 3" chamber options, along with either fixed or screw-in factory chokes. Barrel lengths generally range from 26" to 30", depending on the configuration, and the shotgun was offered in 12, 20, 28, and .410 gauges. Today, the Pigeon Grade XTR remains a sought-after collector’s item while still valued by shooters for its classic styling, solid handling, and historical significance as one of Winchester’s premium over-and-under offerings.
