Introduced in 1978 as the updated successor to the Model 1200 (which itself had replaced the Model 12 in 1964), the Winchester Model 1300 retained the proven rotary-bolt pump action while adding meaningful refinements. Its chamber was lengthened to accept 3-inch shells, and sporting barrels were offered with interchangeable WinChoke tubes and ventilated ribs. Manufactured through 2006, the 1300 family grew into a broad lineup: long-barrel field and sporting guns with choke sets, rifled and smoothbore slug and turkey models, and the compact, short-barreled Defender with an extended magazine for tactical and defensive use. Winchester also released numerous specialty versions to suit different shooters — the lightweight Featherweight, the slug-focused Slug Hunter, the corrosion-resistant Stainless Marine, Realtree-finished turkey guns, the smaller Lady Defender, and, later upland Black Shadow and Shadow Grass editions. At the top end, the XTR line paired upgraded walnut stocks, finer checkering, polished blue finishes, and ventilated ribbed barrels (often with WinChoke tubes), offering hunters and sportsmen a combination of rugged performance and refined presentation.
