Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 22, produced under subcontract by the Spanish firm Laurona around 1975, represents a unique chapter in Winchester's history as it sought to expand its international presence through collaborative manufacturing. Laurona, based in Eibar, Spain—a region with a long-standing reputation for fine gunmaking—was tasked with producing these shotguns to meet the demands of international markets, particularly in Europe, where side-by-side and over/under configurations remained popular. The Model 22 was designed as a solid, workhorse-style break-action shotgun, available in various gauges and typically featuring double triggers, extractors (or optional ejectors), and fixed chokes. While not part of Winchester's core American-made lineup, the Model 22 offered budget-conscious shooters a dependable and aesthetically pleasing firearm that upheld Winchester’s brand prestige abroad. These Spanish-made Winchester Model 22 shotguns typically feature modest engraving on the receiver, hardwood stocks with satin or oil finishes, and a robust boxlock action known for its durability. Laurona applied its experience in traditional gunmaking with efficient production techniques to offer a shotgun that was practical, reliable, and still managed to retain a degree of refinement. Though not as collectible or ornate as Winchester’s higher-end models, the Model 22 remains of interest to firearms enthusiasts for its rarity, international pedigree, and role as a transitional product during a time when Winchester was reevaluating global manufacturing strategies. Today, these shotguns are appreciated for their smooth handling, solid build quality, and as a reflection of a unique cross-cultural partnership between American branding and Spanish craftsmanship.
