Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this outstanding bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Winchester Model 70 SA Heavy Varmint (HBV).
The Tasco 8-32x44 AO is a vintage, high-magnification variable-power rifle scope commonly used for varmint and precision target shooting during the late 20th century. It features an adjustable magnification range from 8x to 32x and a 44mm objective lens, providing clear, detailed sight pictures at extended distances. The adjustable objective (AO) allows the shooter to correct parallax at varying ranges, enhancing image sharpness and aiming precision. Tasco, primarily an American importer rather than a manufacturer, sourced many earlier examples from Japanese factories. Today, these Japanese-made scopes are generally regarded by collectors and shooters as having superior glass quality and reliable mechanical performance compared to the later budget imports.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 70 Varmint Heavy (HBV) is a purpose-built precision rifle manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms during the 1990s, most commonly between 1993 and around 1999, designed specifically for serious varmint shooting and long-range accuracy. It is chambered in a range of flat-shooting calibers, including the 22-250 Remington, 223 Remington, 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester, 220 Swift (1994–98), and 222 Remington (1997–98), offering shooters a versatile lineup suited for everything from prairie dog towns to longer-range predator work. The HBV is built on the post-1964 short-action, push-feed version of the Model 70 and features a 26-inch heavy stainless steel barrel, available in either a plain or, beginning around 1997, a fluted contour—both finished without iron sights and drilled and tapped for optics to accommodate modern scope setups. It typically rides in a black synthetic H-S Precision beavertail stock with an aluminum bedding block for added stability and consistent harmonics, while weighing around 10 3/4 lbs with a five-round internal box magazine. The combination of substantial barrel mass, rigid bedding, and proven Model 70 action results in a steady, confidence-inspiring platform that reflects Winchester’s deliberate emphasis on durability, repeatable accuracy, and practical field performance.
