The Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 represents the pinnacle of classic American bolt-action rifle craftsmanship, produced from 1936 until the major design changes of 1964 that marked the end of the original controlled-round-feed era. Renowned for its forged steel receiver, Mauser-style claw extractor, and exceptionally smooth action, the Pre-64 Model 70 set the benchmark for reliability, accuracy, and durability in sporting rifles. Combined with its high-quality walnut stock, hand-cut checkering, and superior fit and finish, the Pre-64 Model 70 remains one of the most desirable and collectible bolt-action rifles ever made, revered by hunters, shooters, and collectors alike. This example is marked ".30 GOV'T '06" (which is 30-06 Springfield), it is a rifle cartridge designation marking used primarily on pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 barrels.
