Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 72 was introduced in 1938 as a bolt-action rifle designed to interchangeably chamber .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges. Conceived as a simple, dependable, and affordable sporting arm, the Model 72 featured a clean, utilitarian design with a cock-on-opening bolt system that provided smooth, reliable operation in the field. Its lightweight construction and straightforward handling made it well-suited for small-game hunting and general recreational shooting, appealing to both novice shooters and experienced outdoorsmen alike. In 1949, the design was updated, and the designation became the Model 72A, incorporating subtle refinements that enhanced overall functionality while retaining the rifle’s proven simplicity. A notable improvement came in mid-1954, when grooves were added to the top of the receiver to allow scopes to be mounted using Weaver-style “tip-off” mounts, reflecting the increasing demand for optical sighting options. The rifle continued to feature a classic walnut stock with a practical, well-balanced profile, maintaining its reputation for durability and ease of use. The Model 72A was officially discontinued in 1959, bringing an end to the series after a solid production run. Across both the Model 72 and 72A variants, a total of 161,412 rifles were produced.
