Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 9422M was the magnum variant of the highly regarded 9422 lever-action rimfire series, chambered for the powerful .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR). Introduced in the early 1970s, the 9422M offered the same classic handling and smooth cycling as its .22 LR counterpart, but with a substantial increase in velocity and energy, making it a practical choice for small game hunting, varmint control, and even close-range pest management where extra punch was required. Like the standard 9422, it featured a scaled-down version of Winchester’s legendary lever-action design, closely resembling the Model 94 but re-engineered for rimfire cartridges. The 9422M used a robust, precisely fitted internal mechanism with a closed receiver, which not only gave it excellent durability but also contributed to the silky-smooth lever throw that made it one of the most enjoyable rimfires to operate. Its tubular magazine under the barrel typically held 11 rounds of .22 WMR, offering generous capacity for extended shooting sessions. In terms of construction and aesthetics, the Winchester 9422M was every bit a premium rimfire rifle. The rifles were typically built with high-quality American walnut stocks, well-checkered for grip and sporting the same fit and finish that shooters expected from Winchester’s centerfire lever guns. The blued steel barrel and receiver provided a traditional look, while iron sights were standard, with the receiver drilled and tapped to accept scopes or aperture sights for more precise shooting. Accuracy was a strong point, with the .22 WMR cartridge extending the rifle’s effective range well past the capabilities of the .22 LR version. Production of the 9422M continued until 2005, when Winchester closed its New Haven plant, ending the line and immediately creating collector demand for both the standard and magnum variants. Today, the 9422M is prized not only as a practical field rifle but also as a finely crafted lever-action that combines Winchester’s heritage with the versatility of the .22 Magnum cartridge, making it a highly desirable piece for hunters, shooters, and collectors alike.
