Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this STUNNING lever-action rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester 9422XTR Cherokee Carbine!

The Winchester Model 9422 XTR “Cherokee” Carbine is a factory commemorative produced to honor Cherokee heritage, often tied to the Trail of Tears era, and was offered as a presentation-style lever-action in .22 LR. Manufactured in a limited run around 1978, roughly 3,950 examples were produced, making well-preserved, complete examples relatively scarce. These carbines feature a 20? barrel, decorative gold-washed and engraved receiver work, walnut furniture, and a tubular magazine, and they’re most desirable to collectors when accompanied by original packaging and paperwork.

The owner states that this example remains New Old Stock, and we see no evidence to indicate otherwise.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 9422 XTR “Cherokee” Carbine is a decorative, limited-edition lever-action in .22 LR produced as a factory commemorative. Built on the 94/9422-style short-stroke lever platform, it preserves the classic handling and quick pointing associated with Winchester’s compact carbines while dressing the rifle in presentation-grade appointments: a roughly 20? barrel, richly figured walnut furniture, and an engraved/gold-washed receiver finish that sets it apart from everyday field guns. Functionally it behaves like any other quality .22 lever gun—fast to shoulder, easy to operate, and pleasant to shoot for plinking or small-game work—but its visual treatment is clearly aimed at collectors and gift buyers as much as shooters. The commemorative theme ties the rifle to Cherokee history and the Trail-of-Tears era; the decorative engraving and special trim are intended to evoke that heritage and give the carbine a storytelling element beyond its mechanical function. Winchester produced these as presentation pieces rather than rugged field workhorses, so the emphasis is very much on finish, matching trim, and the completeness of the factory package (often including a fitted box and paperwork). That presentation sensibility is why many owners keep them in cabinets rather than treat them as everyday plinkers. Production for the 9422 XTR Cherokee was fairly limited—commonly reported at roughly 3,950 examples—so while not vanishingly rare, it’s a small enough run that well-preserved, complete specimens are uncommon on the secondary market. Scarcity combined with attractive factory trim is what drives collector interest: examples that retain original finish, the factory box, paperwork, and original sights/grips are the most desirable. Conversely, rifles that have been sporterized, re-finished, or heavily used typically lose much of their commemorative appeal even if mechanically sound. From a practical standpoint the carbine is best enjoyed in two ways: as a light, accurate .22 for casual shooting and small-game hunting, or as a display/collector piece where originality and condition are paramount. For those who do shoot one, the tubular magazine (typical capacity around a dozen-plus rounds in .22 LR depending on shell length) and straightforward lever action make it an enjoyable, low-recoil rifle. For collectors, attention should be paid to the bore, metal finish (checking for wear or polish), stock condition (cracks, dents, refinishing), and whether the engraved surfaces retain original gilding or have been over-polished. In short, the Winchester 9422 XTR “Cherokee” Carbine occupies a hybrid niche between handsome presentation rifle and usable .22 carbine. Its commemorative theme, limited production, and factory ornamentation give it collector cachet, while the underlying Winchester lever-action makes it a legitimate, fun shooting rifle if you choose to use it. If you’re evaluating or listing one, emphasize originality and completeness (box, papers, unaltered finish) and document serial numbers and visible condition—those factors matter most to both collectors and thoughtful buyers.
