Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M48, officially designated Puška M.48 7,9 mm ("Rifle M.48 7.9 mm"), was a post–World War II Yugoslavian bolt-action rifle developed as a domestic variant influenced by both the Belgian M24 Mauser series and the German Karabiner 98k. Produced at the state-run Preduzece 44 facility—later renamed Zavodi Crvena Zastava (Red Banner Works)—in Kragujevac, the M48 became the standard service rifle of the Yugoslav People's Army in the early 1950s and remained in widespread use until replaced by the semi-automatic Zastava M59/66, a licensed SKS variant, in the 1960s. While Yugoslavia initially refurbished captured K98k rifles under the designation M98/48, full-scale M48 production began around 1950, incorporating design elements from earlier Mausers while simplifying certain components for more efficient manufacturing.

The early M48 featured fully milled parts, but later versions, such as the M48A and M48B, incorporated stamped components like the magazine floor plate and trigger guard to reduce cost and production time, while retaining milled receivers and bolts for strength and safety. The final variation, the M48BO (“bez oznake,” meaning “without markings”), was an export version devoid of national crests. Despite being introduced at a time when bolt-action rifles were becoming outdated, the M48 was widely produced—over 1.2 million units—and is considered one of the finest postwar Mauser-pattern rifles, known for its craftsmanship, strength, and reliability.
