Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M57, a semi-automatic pistol chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, was adopted as the standard sidearm of the Yugoslav People’s Army in 1961 and produced at the Crvena Zastava factory in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia. Designed as an unlicensed derivative of the Soviet TT-33 Tokarev, the M57 featured a longer grip to accommodate a nine-round magazine, a swinging-link short recoil system, a fixed barrel, and simplified internal mechanisms that enhanced reliability and durability. Serial production began in 1963, and the pistol became a mainstay of Yugoslav military and police forces. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the factory was renamed Zastava Oružje AD in 2005 and continues to operate in modern-day Serbia, producing new M57 pistols alongside classic surplus examples. Valued for its affordability, robust design, and historical significance, the M57 remains highly popular among collectors and enthusiasts, standing as a testament to Cold War-era ingenuity and the enduring legacy of Yugoslavian arms manufacturing.
