Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M59/66 is a Yugoslav license-built evolution of the Soviet SKS that combines the reliable, long-stroke gas operation and fixed-magazine practicality of the original with a distinctive integrated rifle-grenade capability. Externally, it retains the familiar SKS silhouette—wood stock, 10-round fixed magazine fed by stripper clips, and a robust tilting-bolt action—but the M59/66 is fitted with a permanently attached 22 mm grenade-launcher spigot and an extended muzzle brake, plus a folding ladder sight for grenade ranging. A dedicated gas-port shutoff on the gas block prevents the semi-auto action from cycling when launching grenades, and the front-sight/bayonet mount was redesigned to accommodate the launcher and a unique Yugoslav folding bayonet. Barrel and overall dimensions mirror the carbine layout (roughly a 16.5" barrel and 39–41" overall), producing a balanced, serviceable carbine that kept the SKS’s hallmark simplicity while adding infantry firepower. Produced in large numbers by Zastava from the early 1960s onward, the M59/66 and its later A1 refinements served across Yugoslavia and in numerous export customers, seeing use in a range of conflicts and second-line roles where its rifle-grenade capability proved valuable. Zastava built the M59 family both for domestic issues and for export—many later examples added night-sight options and other small updates—so the platform appears in military inventories and surplus flows worldwide. Today, the M59/66 is respected by collectors and shooters for its historical place as the "Yugo SKS" (often called the "papovka"), its distinct grenade-launcher engineering, and its durable, easy-maintain design that reflects Zastava’s adaptation of a proven Soviet pattern.
