Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M98/48, often referred to as the Mod.98/48, Model 98/48, or Yugo K98k, is a refurbished bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92x57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser) cartridge. This cartridge was adopted by the Yugoslav People's Army after World War II as part of their efforts to modernize and standardize their armaments. The M98/48 is based on the Mauser Kar98k, a rifle widely used by German forces during World War II. After the war, many Kar98k rifles were left behind by retreating German troops or captured by Yugoslav partisans. In the years following the war, the Yugoslav government decided to refurbish these surplus rifles to bolster their military capabilities. Production of the M98/48 began in the late 1940s at the Zastava Arms factory in Kragujevac, which became known for its quality firearms manufacturing. The refurbishment process involved overhauling captured Kar98k rifles, including replacing worn components, refinishing wood stocks, and updating sights to enhance accuracy. Some variants of the M98/48 included modifications for improved ergonomics and usability. The M98/48 was used as the standard-issue rifle for the Yugoslav People's Army and saw action in various conflicts, including the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. It was valued for its robust design and reliability, which are characteristics inherited from its Mauser lineage.

In addition to military use, the M98/48 became popular among civilian shooters and collectors, particularly in regions where Mauser rifles are highly esteemed. Its historical significance lies not only in its military service but also as a representation of Yugoslavia's post-war efforts to establish its own identity and military capabilities in the context of the Cold War. As the Yugoslav People's Army transitioned to more modern firearms, such as the Zastava M70, the M98/48 gradually became obsolete. However, it remains a notable example of post-war military rifle design and the innovative reuse of surplus weaponry from World War II.
