Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Zastava M48, officially known as Puška M.48 7,9 mm ("Rifle M.48 7.9 mm"), is a Yugoslavian bolt-action rifle that was based on the Belgian-designed M24 series, with influences from the German Karabiner 98k (K98k), and served as the standard-issue rifle for the Yugoslav People's Army from the early 1950s until the early 1960s, when it was replaced by the Zastava M59/66, a licensed copy of the Soviet SKS semi-automatic carbine. After World War II, Yugoslavia received tooling and equipment from Germany as part of war reparations. This included machinery to produce the Mauser 98k, the standard infantry rifle of the Wehrmacht during the war. Utilizing this equipment, Yugoslavia established the Preduzece 44 facility (later known as Zavodi Crvena Zastava or "Red Flag Works") in Kragujevac to manufacture the M48 Mauser variant. The M48 was designed to be a modernized version of the Mauser 98k, incorporating features from both the M24 series and the K98k. It utilized an intermediate-length action and receiver, similar to the M24, and featured a stock design akin to the K98k. The rifle was chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser, the same caliber as the K98k, and employed a five-round internal magazine fed by stripper clips.

Production began in 1950 and continued until 1965, with several variants introduced to simplify manufacturing: the fully milled M48, the M48A with some stamped components, and the M48B, which incorporated additional stamped parts such as the trigger guard. A further unmarked export version, the M48BO, was also produced. Despite being introduced at a time when bolt-action rifles were becoming obsolete, the M48 was robust, accurate, and reliable, seeing widespread export and combat use in conflicts such as the Algerian War, the Lebanese Civil War, and the Yugoslav Wars.
