Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The L. Pomeroy Model 1816 is a contractor-produced variant of the U.S. Model 1816 flintlock musket, manufactured by Lemuel Pomeroy, a prominent early American arms maker based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA, who supplied firearms to the U.S. government under contract during the early 19th century. Built to the same general pattern as muskets produced at federal armories like Harpers Ferry and Springfield Armory, the Pomeroy Model 1816 is a .69 caliber smoothbore flintlock designed for infantry use, featuring a barrel of approximately 29 inches, a full-length wooden stock, and iron furniture, along with provisions for mounting a socket bayonet. Like other Model 1816 muskets, it uses a flintlock ignition system in its original form, in which a flint striking the frizzen produces sparks to ignite priming powder in the pan, though many surviving examples were later converted to percussion ignition during mid-19th-century upgrades. Pomeroy’s contract muskets are typically marked with his name or initials on the lock plate, and while they adhere to government specifications, they can exhibit subtle differences in fit, finish, and component shaping compared to armory-produced examples, reflecting the nature of early American contract manufacturing. These muskets were produced during a time when the United States was expanding its domestic arms industry and relying on private contractors to supplement federal production, making them an important part of early industrial and military history. While overall production numbers were significant, contractor-marked examples like those from Pomeroy are less commonly encountered than standard Springfield or Harpers Ferry muskets, which adds collector interest. Today, the L. Pomeroy Model 1816 is valued for its historical significance, its connection to early American gunsmithing, and its role in the development of standardized military arms production in the United States.
