Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Model 1862 Pocket Police is a .36-caliber, five-shot cap-and-ball percussion revolver developed in 1861 as part of Colt’s expansion of its small-frame black powder handguns. Built on the 1849 Pocket frame, it represents a scaled-up evolution of the earlier .31 caliber Pocket models, designed to bridge the gap between compact pocket revolvers and the larger Navy and Army patterns of the period. Featuring a rebated cylinder to accommodate the larger .36-caliber chambering while maintaining a relatively compact profile, the model was well-suited for both personal defense and wartime carry. Most commonly produced with a round barrel and Colt’s improved “creeping” loading lever system, it offered leverage and a smoother, more controlled loading process than earlier designs. The revolver retains Colt’s traditional small-frame construction, with a case-hardened frame, brass trigger guard, and grip frame. The sights consisted of a bead front sight and a hammer-grooved rear notch. Fitted with smooth walnut grips, it provided a natural and secure hold consistent with Colt’s mid-century design approach.

Production began during the Civil War and continued until 1873, ending as Colt transitioned from percussion revolvers to metallic cartridge firearms. Manufactured alongside the closely related Pocket Navy variant, the Pocket Police differed primarily in its round barrel and fluted cylinder configuration. Today, surviving examples are regarded as representative of Colt’s transitional design philosophy, combining the portability of the Pocket series with the increased power and effectiveness of the .36-caliber that defined Colt’s percussion revolvers of the era.
