The Springfield Model 1863 rifled musket, manufactured by Springfield Armory between 1863 and 1865, represents the final standardized evolution of the U.S. percussion rifle-musket employed by Union forces during the American Civil War. Chambered in .58 caliber and based on the proven Model 1861 system, it retained the 40-inch rifled barrel and Minié ball cartridge principle that defined mid-19th century infantry small arms while incorporating wartime production refinements intended to simplify manufacture and increase output. The Model 1863 exists in two principal variants: the Type I, which eliminated traditional barrel band springs in favor of oval, screw-secured clamping bands and introduced a redesigned percussion bolster, revised hammer profile, modified ramrod, and case-hardened lock components; and the Type II, which restored spring-retained solid barrel bands and simplified the rear sight configuration, reflecting both manufacturing standardization and field feedback.
