Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1863 rifled musket, manufactured by Springfield Armory between 1863 and 1865, represents the final standardized evolution of the U.S. percussion rifle-musket employed by Union forces during the American Civil War. Chambered in .58 caliber and based on the proven Model 1861 system, it retained the 40-inch rifled barrel and Minié ball cartridge principle that defined mid-19th century infantry small arms while incorporating wartime production refinements intended to simplify manufacture and increase output. The Model 1863 exists in two principal variants: the Type I, which eliminated traditional barrel band springs in favor of oval, screw-secured clamping bands and introduced a redesigned percussion bolster, revised hammer profile, modified ramrod, and case-hardened lock components; and the Type II, which restored spring-retained solid barrel bands and simplified the rear sight configuration, reflecting both manufacturing standardization and field feedback. Many of the Type I mechanical refinements were influenced by contemporaneous contract-production practices associated with Colt-manufactured Model 1861 muskets, contributing to streamlined wartime configuration.

In service, the Model 1863 provided effective infantry fire capability at practical ranges of approximately 200 to 300 yards, with trained soldiers capable of sustaining two to four aimed rounds per minute using paper cartridge ammunition and percussion cap ignition. As the last muzzle-loading long arm standardized for large-scale U.S. military production before the postwar transition to breech-loading systems such as the Springfield “Trapdoor,” the Model 1863 occupies a pivotal position in the technological progression of American infantry armament, standing as one of the most extensively produced and widely issued rifled muskets of the Civil War era.
