Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Designed by Antoine Alphonse Chassepot, the French Modèle 1866 Chassepot paper-cartridge needlefire rifle stood as the premier military service arm of the Franco-Prussian War era. Following the development of modern brass metallic cartridges, the French military arsenal system upgraded thousands of existing Chassepot rifles into the metallic cartridge Modèle 1866/74 Gras system designed by Captain Basile Gras. This historic arsenal conversion involved modifying the bolt face and extractor assembly, re-chambering the barrel for the powerful 11x59mmR Gras metallic cartridge, and re-issuing these formidable weapons throughout French frontline and colonial service.

This exceptional antique specimen (serial number M 39440) is script-engraved "St. Etienne Mle 1866" along the left receiver flat and stamped "S.1871" on the barrel breech, alongside "S.1866/74" conversion stampings and sharp French inspector proof marks ("J.H", circled "B", and circled "J"). What elevates this antique rifle into the ultimate collector tier is its incredible 100% all-matching serial number status—serial "M 39440" is stamped on the octagonal barrel flat, receiver, breech block, cleaning rod, stock butt, and wood stock flats. The French walnut stock retains a crisp roundel arsenal plug reading "ST. ETIENNE M.E. 1871". Accompanying this rifle is a correct M1866 Chassepot "Yataghan" curved sword bayonet with brass hilt, hooked quillon, steel scabbard, and matching period proofing. Showing bright clean metal surfaces, razor-sharp inspector cartouches, tight bolt lockup, and clean rifling, this complete all-matching antique French military rifle represents a crown-jewel acquisition for European military arms collectors.
