The Springfield Model 1873 is an iconic single-shot, trapdoor-action military rifle chambered in .45-70 Government, designed by Erskine S. Allin and adopted as the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle of the United States Army in 1873. Built at the historic Springfield Armory, the rifle features a hinged trapdoor breechblock, 32?-inch barrel, robust forged steel construction, and was engineered to provide greater firepower and reliability than the muzzle-loading rifles it replaced. The Model 1873 served as the primary U.S. military rifle throughout the Indian Wars, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and remained in service through the Spanish-American War before eventually being replaced by magazine-fed bolt-action rifles.
