Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this RARE and seldom-seen single-shot rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Remington Model 1876 Navy Carbine.
The Remington 1867 Navy Carbine is a rare and highly desirable example of America’s transition into the metallic-cartridge era, built around the rugged and proven rolling-block action. Approximately 5,000 Navy carbines are believed to have been produced, and only a fraction survives today, making them seldom encountered on the collector market. Their limited production, clear U.S. Navy association, and role in bridging percussion and cartridge technology place the 1867 Navy Carbine among the most sought-after post–Civil War American martial firearms.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 1867 represents an important transitional firearm in the evolution from muzzle-loading rifles to metallic-cartridge arms in the post–Civil War period. Developed by converting existing Remington percussion rifles to accept rimfire metallic cartridges, the Model 1867 utilized a rolling block–style breech system that was simple, strong, and reliable. This conversion approach reflected both economic practicality and technological progress, allowing governments and military forces to modernize older arms without the expense of entirely new production. The rifle was typically chambered for rimfire cartridges and featured robust construction suited for military service.

From a historical perspective, the Model 1867 is significant for demonstrating the adaptability of the rolling block system, which would go on to become one of Remington’s most successful and widely adopted actions worldwide. While it was not produced in the same numbers or with the same longevity as later rolling block models, it played a key role in proving the effectiveness of breech-loading cartridge rifles. Collectors and historians value the Remington Model 1867 for its place in firearms development, its connection to surplus and conversion-era military practices, and its role in bridging two major technological eras in small-arms history.
