Adopted by the Imperial German Army under Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1884, the Model 71/84 updated the original turn-bolt Gewehr 71 by incorporating Alfred von Kropatschek's tubular magazine system directly beneath the barrel. Holding eight rounds of heavy 11x60mmR Mauser black powder cartridges, the 71/84 utilized a mechanical lifter mechanism fed via a magazine cut-off lever on the left receiver wall—allowing soldiers to hold magazine rounds in reserve while operating the rifle as a single-loader.
