Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this DESIRABLE single-action revolver today for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Frontier Six Shooter Bisley Model!
According to the Colt Factory Archives Letter, this Colt Bisley Model Revolver was shipped in .44 caliber, most likely the desirable .44-40 chambering, with a 5 1/2-inch barrel, blue finish, and rubber stocks. The letter documents that this example was shipped on February 12, 1898, to Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Mfg. Company San Francisco Agency in San Francisco, California, as part of a 10-gun shipment. The San Francisco Agency destination adds strong Western-market appeal, as Colt firearms shipped through that office were distributed into one of the most iconic regions associated with frontier-era revolvers. With its documented 1898 shipment date, Bisley configuration, desirable barrel length, blue finish, rubber stocks, and shipment to Colt’s San Francisco Agency, this revolver represents a highly interesting and well-documented first-generation Colt Bisley with strong late-19th-century collector appeal.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Frontier Six-Shooter (Bisley Model) represents a distinctive and highly specialized evolution of Colt’s legendary Single Action Army, developed in the late 19th century to meet the demands of competitive target shooters. Introduced in 1894 and named after the famous Bisley shooting range in England, the Bisley model featured a radically redesigned grip frame, hammer, and trigger intended to improve ergonomics, recoil control, and trigger reach during precision shooting. The lowered, wider hammer spur, forward-curved grip, and longer trigger allowed for enhanced control and a more natural point of aim, particularly in slow-fire and rapid-fire target competition. Chambered in popular frontier and sporting calibers such as .45 Colt, .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20, the Bisley combined Colt’s proven mechanical reliability with refinements aimed squarely at accuracy and shooter comfort. Often marked with the iconic “Frontier Six-Shooter” designation when chambered in .44-40 Winchester, these revolvers bridged the worlds of competitive marksmanship and practical frontier use. While originally intended as a target revolver, the Bisley model found favor among lawmen, outdoorsmen, and skilled shooters who appreciated its superior handling characteristics. Production of the original Bisley model continued until 1915, making original examples relatively scarce today, particularly in high condition or uncommon calibers. As a result, the Colt Bisley Frontier Six-Shooter is highly regarded by collectors and historians alike, valued both for its innovative design and its unique role in the evolution of single-action revolvers.
