The Gewehr 98 is one of the most influential bolt-action military rifles ever produced, serving as the standard infantry rifle of the German Empire from its adoption in 1898 through the First World War and establishing the mechanical foundation for countless sporting and military rifles that followed. Designed by Paul Mauser and manufactured by Mauser and numerous state arsenals, the rifle introduced the definitive Mauser 98 action, featuring dual front locking lugs, a third safety lug, controlled-round feeding through a massive non-rotating claw extractor, and a fixed-blade ejector system that together created an exceptionally strong, reliable, and durable bolt mechanism.
