Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1892 is a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning as a smaller, lighter version of his large-frame Model 1886. It replaced the Model 1873 for pistol-caliber rounds, such as the .44-40. When asked by Winchester to design an improved action to compete with a recent Marlin offering, Browning wagered he could complete a prototype in under a month or build it for free; he delivered a functioning model in less than two weeks. The rifle debuted in .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40 Winchester centerfire calibers, followed by the .25-20 in 1895 and a rare run of .218 Bee models from 1936 to 1938, with the .44-40 configuration proving to be the undisputed sales leader. While the later Winchester Model 53 (1924) and Model 65 (1933) were modernized, streamlined variants built on the '92 action, the original model saw extensive historical use: Admiral Robert E. Peary carried an 1892 to the North Pole, explorer Percy Fawcett carried one in the Amazon, jaguar hunter Sasha Siemel used a custom bayonet-equipped carbine, and Secretary of War Patrick Hurley received the one-millionth production piece on December 13, 1932.

Additionally, the British Royal Navy purchased 21,000 Model 1892s during World War I to arm small patrol craft. Although the rifle debuted after the closing of the American frontier—leaving the "Guns that Won the West" title to the earlier Models 1866 and 1873—it became a Western pop-culture icon by standing in for its older siblings in hundreds of Hollywood productions. John Wayne famously carried custom, large-loop Model '92s in dozens of films, while Chuck Connors (The Rifleman) and Steve McQueen (Wanted: Dead or Alive) popularized other notable screen variants.
