According to the Smith & Wesson factory records, this .44 Hand Ejector First Model revolver, chambered in .44 S&W Special, was originally shipped from the factory on March 14, 1911, and delivered to M. W. Robinson in New York City, New York. The records further confirm that this early “Triple Lock” was factory configured with a 6½-inch barrel and blue finish, making it a particularly desirable documented example of Smith & Wesson’s celebrated First Model .44 Hand Ejector.

The Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector First Model, better known to collectors as the “Triple Lock,” is widely regarded as one of the finest and most historically important revolvers ever produced by Smith & Wesson. Introduced in 1908, it was the company’s first large-frame, swing-out-cylinder revolver built on what would become the N-frame, and it helped establish the powerful .44 S&W Special cartridge. Its famous nickname comes from its distinctive three-point cylinder-locking system, which secured the cylinder at the front through the ejector-rod center pin, at the rear through the conventional locking bolt, and at the yoke through an additional frame-mounted locking mechanism. This elaborate construction reflected Smith & Wesson’s pursuit of exceptional strength, precision, and craftsmanship during the early twentieth century. Production of the First Model lasted only until 1915, when Smith & Wesson introduced the simplified Second Model and eliminated the additional yoke lock. Because the Triple Lock required extensive machining, careful fitting, and a shrouded ejector-rod housing, it was more expensive to manufacture than later variations. Its relatively brief production period, unmistakable engineering, and association with the introduction of the .44 Special have made surviving examples especially desirable among advanced Smith & Wesson collectors. Originality is particularly important, with collectors placing strong emphasis on the correct barrel length, factory finish, stocks, matching numbered components, sharp markings, and the preservation of the revolver’s distinctive locking system. According to the Smith & Wesson factory records, this particular .44 Hand Ejector First Model was shipped from the factory on March 14, 1911, and delivered to M. W. Robinson in New York City, New York. The records confirm that it was originally chambered in .44 S&W Special and shipped with a 6½-inch barrel and blue finish.
