The Colt Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless is a historically significant semi-automatic pistol designed by Colt and introduced in 1908 as a refined version of John Browning's compact blowback pistol design. Chambered in .380 ACP, it was developed as a concealed-carry defensive handgun for civilians, professionals, and law enforcement users who wanted a reliable, easily concealable pistol with a smooth, snag-free profile. Despite its name, the pistol is not truly hammerless—the hammer is concealed inside the rear of the slide, giving it a clean external appearance. It features a steel frame and slide, 3.75-inch barrel, 6-round magazine, grip safety, manual safety, and Colt's signature high-quality machining and fit. The M1908 Pocket Hammerless became known for its excellent ergonomics, reliability, and elegant design. Its internal hammer, rounded edges, and slim profile made it ideal for pocket carry, while the blowback operating system provided simple operation and dependable function. Produced with Colt's high level of craftsmanship during the early 20th century, many examples feature deep polished blue finishes, factory engravings, pearl or ivory grips, and fine checkered wood grips. It was also offered in a .32 ACP version based on the earlier Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless design.
