The Lee–Enfield No.1 Mk III / SMLE (Short Magazine Lee-Enfield) is a British bolt-action service rifle chambered in .303 British, introduced in 1907 and widely used through both World Wars and well into the mid-20th century across Commonwealth forces. It operates on a manually operated, rear-locking bolt system with a 10-round detachable box magazine, typically loaded via 5-round stripper clips, and is known for its exceptionally fast cycling speed due to its cock-on-closing action. The Mk III configuration standardized earlier SMLE improvements, including a simplified rear sight on the barrel (rather than the earlier long-range volley sight system on most later examples), a magazine cutoff on early production rifles, and improved manufacturing simplifications for wartime production. Barrels are typically 25.2 inches, with a full-length hardwood stock, nose cap, and handguards designed for military durability. Production was carried out across multiple factories including RSAF Enfield, BSA, LSA, and various Commonwealth arsenals such as Lithgow (Australia) and Ishapore (India), with many rifles later undergoing arsenal refurbishment and being redesignated as Mk III* rifles with simplified wartime features.
