Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
As the United States entered the First World War, the demand for service pistols reached unprecedented heights, prompting Colt to radically accelerate production of the Model 1911. By mid-1918, in an effort to streamline manufacturing and maximize daily output for the American Expeditionary Forces, Colt simplified its traditional carbon-bluing procedure. By omitting the labor-intensive final fine-polishing steps, the factory produced a darker, rougher, and more heavily oxidized finish. Known to military collectors as the "Black Army" variant, these late-1918 production pistols represent the true working sidearm of doughboys on the Western Front. Pistols produced during this late wartime period are distinguished by specific military manufacturing characteristics. To replace individual inspector monographs and speed up the acceptance process, the U.S. Ordnance Department implemented the Eagle's Head inspector proof mark in mid-1918. This example proudly displays the crisp "S12" Eagle's Head inspector mark stamped on the left side of the frame above the magazine release, verifying its acceptance under the Springfield Ordnance District. Outfitted with a long smooth trigger, wide spur hammer, flat mainspring housing, and correct double-diamond checkered walnut stocks, this pistol exhibits the exact mechanical blueprint that defined peak WWI production.
