The Colt Pre-Woodsman refers to the earliest versions of Colt’s famous .22 LR semi-automatic target pistol, produced from 1915 until 1927, before Colt officially began stamping the “Woodsman” name on the receiver. Originally marketed as the Colt Automatic Pistol, Caliber .22, Target Model, the design was based on a John Moses Browning concept that was refined by Colt engineers. Built with Colt’s traditional high-quality machining and hand-fitted craftsmanship, the Pre-Woodsman featured a simple blowback action, fixed barrel, 10-round magazine, slim steel frame, checkered walnut grips, and excellent target sights. Early examples were available primarily with a 6 5/8-inch barrel, and variations developed over time with different barrel profiles and refinements. These early pistols established the foundation for the legendary Colt Woodsman line, which would go on to become one of the most respected American .22 target pistols of the 20th century.
