Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The U.S. Army Ordnance Department, working with American manufacturers, modified the British Pattern 1914 (P14) rifle to accommodate the standard U.S. .30-06 Springfield round. Production of this adapted firearm, officially designated the U.S. Model of 1917 Enfield, began in the summer of 1917. Over 1.18 million rifles were produced at the Pennsylvania-based Eddystone Arsenal (a subsidiary of Remington) alone, making it the largest single source of U.S. rifles during World War I. The M1917 featured a six-round internal magazine—one more than the standard U.S. M1903 Springfield—along with a modified bolt face and feeding mechanism to cycle the rimless American cartridge. As the primary service rifle of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, it equipped approximately 75% of U.S. troops by the Armistice in November 1918. The rifle continued to see limited service roles during World War II—especially with rear-echelon units and various home defense guards—and remained in arsenals into the Korean War era. Many were later sold through civilian surplus programs, where they were often modified for hunting or target shooting, and became popular among collectors and shooters. The M1917’s robust action and accuracy made it a favorite for sporter conversions, and its legacy lives on in both military history and civilian marksmanship circles.
