Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The U.S. Army Colt Model 1917 revolver is a historic American military sidearm developed during World War I to supplement production of the M1911 pistol. Chambered in .45 ACP, the revolver was manufactured by Colt and based on the company's New Service platform, a large-frame double-action revolver known for its strength and reliability. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, demand for sidearms quickly exceeded the number of M1911 pistols that could be produced, leading the Army to contract both Colt and Smith & Wesson to manufacture revolvers capable of firing the same .45 ACP cartridge used in the M1911. To make this possible in a revolver design, the Model 1917 utilized half-moon clips that held three rounds each, allowing for proper headspacing and rapid extraction. The revolver featured a 5.5-inch barrel, fixed sights, a six-round cylinder, and a robust steel construction designed to withstand harsh battlefield conditions. Soldiers appreciated its powerful .45 caliber stopping power, smooth double-action trigger pull, and exceptional durability. The Colt Model 1917 saw extensive service during World War I and continued to serve through World War II, where many remained in military inventories and were issued to support personnel, military police, and other troops. Following military service, large numbers were sold as surplus firearms and became popular among civilian shooters, collectors, and law enforcement agencies. Today, original U.S. Army Colt 1917 revolvers are highly sought after by military firearms collectors due to their historical significance, connection to both World Wars, and role in bridging the gap between traditional revolvers and the increasingly dominant semi-automatic pistol era. The revolver remains a respected example of American wartime ingenuity and one of the most recognizable military wheelguns ever produced.
