The Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless is a .32 ACP, self-loading, semi-automatic pistol designed by John Browning and produced by Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, which produced approximately 570,000 units from 1903 to 1945 across five distinct engineering variations. These collector-designated iterations began with the Type I (1903–1908), featuring a 4-inch barrel and separate barrel bushing; followed by the Type II (1908–1910), which shortened the barrel to 3.75 inches; the Type III (1910–1926), which integrated the barrel bushing directly into the slide; the Type IV (1926–1941), which added a Tansley magazine disconnect safety; and the Type V (1941–1945), which introduced military sights for World War II production blocks. Despite the title "hammerless", the Model 1903 does have an internal hammer completely covered and hidden from view under the rear of the slide, a design choice engineered to allow the pistol to be withdrawn from a pocket very quickly and smoothly without snagging on clothing. The platform proved so successful that Colt introduced a sister variant in 1908, designated the Model 1908, chambered in the more powerful .380 ACP cartridge. Both models were widely issued to officers from several police departments during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as to US Army and US Air Force general officers from World War II through the 1970s, until they were replaced in 1972 with the RIA Colt M15 general officer's model.

In addition to lawful owners, many gangsters of the pre-World War II era favored the Model 1903 and Model 1908 because they were relatively small and easily concealed; Al Capone reportedly kept a Model 1903 in his coat pocket, Bank robber John Dillinger heavily favored and was known to use the Colt Model 1903 (.32 ACP) throughout his notorious crime spree, and Willie Sutton had a Model 1903 when he was captured by police in Brooklyn on February 18, 1952.
