Item Description
“Transition” Model 1911 pistols refer to a very short production window in 1924 when Colt began incorporating the improved features that would define the M1911A1, but before the official designation was adopted. These pistols retain the original “MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY” slide marking, yet reflect many of the enhancements developed by the Ordnance Department—such as the arched mainspring housing, relief cuts behind the trigger, and improved ergonomics. Because the “M1911A1” designation was not officially applied until 1926, these early improved pistols occupy a unique in-between status, making them distinct from both earlier 1911s and later standardized A1 production. Their rarity is driven by the limited 1924 production run of approximately 10,000 pistols, with far fewer surviving today in original configuration due to heavy service use and arsenal rebuilds.
This example is further distinguished by retaining its original factory barrel, a feature seldom encountered on pistols from this era. Given the frequency of part replacement during military service, original barrels are often lost, making their presence a significant indicator of originality. The combination of transitional features, limited production, and high degree of correctness places this pistol firmly within a highly sought-after niche among advanced collectors.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. The design was the end-result of a series of developments by famous gun designer John Browning, starting with the Model 1900.The advances made by Browning were revolutionary at the time, and were so successful that they are considered commonplace today.
