Adopted on December 7, 1893, to modernize Spain's infantry, the Model 1893 Spanish Mauser is a foundational bolt-action firearm designed by Paul Mauser. This design directly fixed the awkward, protruding single-column magazines of the earlier 1889, 1890, and 1891 models. To launch the contract, initial production was outsourced to Ludwig Loewe & Co. of Berlin, which manufactured roughly 200,000 units that formed the backbone of Spanish forces during the Spanish-American War. The Spanish state arms manufacturing plant—the Fábrica de Armas de Oviedo—began domestic production in 1896 and chambered in 7×57mm Mauser, the rifle pioneered a short, staggered-column, five-round internal box magazine that fits perfectly flush with the bottom of the wooden stock and reloads rapidly via stripper clips, an innovation that earned its inventor the Spanish Grand Cross of the Order of Military Merit.
